Finalists: The Last Starfighter vs. Logan's Run
I've been looking forward to this one. Sci-Fi at its most fun! :)
The Last Starfighter was released in 1984, directed by Nick Castle, and starred Lance Guest, Dan O'Herlihy, and Catherine Mary Stewart. One of the first films to use CGI effects to generate the spacecraft, The Last Starfighter combined great action along with a healthy sense of humor. It also used a standard plot, that being small town boy makes it big, but put it in a concept not normally seen.
Logan's Run was released in 1976, directed by Michael Anderson, and starred Michael York, Richard Jordan, and Jenny Agutter. The story of a domed civilization in the far future populated by people who are all under 30 years old, and the one man who attempts to find out the truth of it all, this film represents all of its 70's kin in the effects as well as ideas (there's a lot of hippie ideas, including a cheesy robot that has taken to collecting frozen versions of fish and birds). But Logan's Run is excellent in its story-telling, and had a quality akin to the original Planet of the Apes.
Love 'em both, but nothing's better than folks trying to renew at Carousel. Logan's Run moves on.
